Advent through Christmas can be a busy time of year, making it difficult sometimes to take up new projects. I, Tony, had been stewing on how to design a seminary course on the themes of this zine for a while, but have not yet had an opportunity to teach such a class. I thought, then, that I might start a reading group. Initially I had designed a 16 week reading schedule to mimic a semester. I was warned off such an intense project by some close to me. One cannot expect most working adults to take on such a load, especially for something uncredited and not connected to any formal academic institution. 8 weeks, however, seems doable.
It so happens that this season of Epiphany is 8 weeks long. Usually it is Lent or Advent when Christians take up a reading challenge: Say a Bible study or a devotional book thematically related to the season. But why not an Epiphany study?
The Hour Magazine is hosting an eight week reading course and discussion group that will cover the basic history and thought of Anglican Socialism. It is for those who would already consider themselves a Christian Socialist, and those who don’t. A participant should expect to read around 25-75 pages a week and meet for Evening Prayer and an online facilitated conversation for about an hour on the Sunday evenings of Epiphany. I'm going to facilitate this with Google Classroom rather than, say, a Discord server. Because frankly I find the discord user experience too complicated, and I want to use this as a beta test of future online courses. So do bear with my learning how the platform works.
This first round is offered at no cost to all through the support of The Hour’s Patreon members. To learn more or to sign up you can DM thehourmag.bsky.social or email tonydhunt@gmail.com
